Let us plant trees today for a better environment, a better future

CAYO organized a successful tree planting campaign in collaboration with local partners and stakeholders in Araabi Center. The campaign, which focused on the organization environmental and climate change initiative, aimed to promote environmental sustainability and create a greener future by planting more than 2,000 trees in key locations within Araabi Center, Sitti Zone. The tree planting activities took place from November 23 to November 26, 2023, and involved the participation of volunteers, community members, and students from Araabi Health Center, Sheik Dahir Secondary and Preparatory School, and Araabi town community. comprised various activities that spanned four days and the following activities were carried out during the campaign:

Planning and Preparation: Prior to the campaign, collaborated with local authorities, community leaders, and educational institutions to identify suitable locations for tree planting. Araabi Health Center, Sheik Dahir Secondary and Preparatory School, and Araabi town were chosen as the primary sites. We obtained the necessary permissions, procured saplings, and organized logistics for the campaign.

Mobilization and Awareness: We launched an extensive awareness campaign focused on environmental degradation and climate change. The organization highlighted the importance of tree planting as a practical solution to mitigate climate change and emphasized the need for sustainable environmental practices. Through social media, community gatherings, and school visits, we spread the message and engaged the local community in discussions on climate change impacts and solutions.
Tree Planting: During the designated campaign days, volunteers, community members, and students came together to plant trees at Araabi Health Center, Sheik Dahir Secondary and Preparatory School, and Araabi town. They were provided with the necessary tools, including shovels and watering cans, to ensure proper planting techniques. The participants demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication while planting a total of over 2,000 trees across the three locations. Care and Maintenance: To ensure the long-term survival and growth of the newly planted trees, we facilitated training sessions on tree care and maintenance. Local experts provided guidance on watering schedules, mulching, protection from pests, and periodic monitoring. The community members and students were encouraged to take responsibility for the well-being of the trees and engage in regular maintenance activities. Impact and Achievements, achieved significant impact and numerous achievements, particularly in relation to environmental conservation and climate change efforts, including:

Climate Change Mitigation: By planting over 2,000 trees, the campaign contributed to mitigating the effects of climate change. Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The newly planted trees will play a vital role in combatting climate change by sequestering carbon and helping to stabilize the local climate. Environmental Restoration: The campaign supported the restoration of the local ecosystem by planting trees in strategic locations. Trees provide habitat for wildlife, prevent soil erosion, and promote biodiversity. The newly established green spaces will contribute to the preservation of the region’s natural environment and enhance its resilience to environmental challenges. Youth Engagement and Empowerment: Through this campaign, we successfully engaged and empowered the youth to take an active role in environmental conservation and climate action. By involving students from Sheik Dahir Secondary and Preparatory School, we fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership among the younger generation.

This engagement will have a lasting impact as youth become environmental stewards and advocates for sustainable development. Community Awareness and Education: The campaign effectively raised awareness about environmental degradation and climate change within the local community. Through targeted awareness activities, we educated community members about the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as the importance of environmental conservation. The campaign facilitated knowledge sharing, encouraging individuals to adopt sustainable practices and make informed choices for a greener future.
